about the workshops
THE POETRY, THE KNOWLEDGE, THE LIFE SKILLS:
During your retreat you will be able to take full advantage of 3 unique life changing workshops for your craft.
All three workshops teach great poetic devices and skills for your writing, but they ALSO offer so much more to apply to your life once you leave the retreat. It’s a beautiful thing…
We will meet at the cabin at check in, spend some time introducing ourselves and getting settled in before we begin the workshop the first evening and yes, the campfire and smores will be happening!
Space/Expansion Workshop : Learning Hyper focus, body scans in poetry, unravel the hidden message in how you react to what’s around you and understanding what your subconscious is dying to tell you, train your brain to pinpoint the poem while feeling yourself expand. Location: Blue Ridge Overlook (FRIDAY AT SUNSET)
Time Workshop: In American society, busyness has become our culture. I’m by no means hating on the grind, but that kind of lifestyle can be harmful to your writing practice. As poets, we translate the world’s stories as well as our own. That means we have to take time to notice, to take in all of the things around us. During this workshop you will also learn how perspective and point of view plays a major part in your poetry. Find unique ways to tell your story as we explore these devices. What’s your relationship with time? Find out… Location: Linville Falls (SATURDAY EARLY AFTERNOON)
Hidden Light: Have you learned to fall in love with your own darkness? What’s on the other side of your shadow? Find hidden strengths and beauty within as we venture to “the other side” in this self reflective workshop based around light we’ve kept hidden or have yet to discover within. Learn how mixing up poetic elements with the senses can break you out of patterns or ruts. Location: Black Light Mine Tour, Emerald Village (SATURDAY EVENING)
ABOUT YOUR GUIDE
Traveling is in my blood.
I was raised on the open road and fell in love with the highway at an early age.
From all across the wide expanding United States to romantic Europe, magical Mexico and back, I have always cherished the expansion of mind, spirit and creativity while experiencing new places.
My values are freedom, fun, wonder and curiosity.
I’ve been writing ever since I could pick up a pen. Poetry was my way to process, capture and communicate (we didn’t have social media back then!) all the amazing things I experienced growing up on the road.
When raised by construction workers and bikers…
It’s hard to share how a sunset in Arizona looks like a woman blushing against a dusty bed frame of a sky… But Poetry always listened.
When I’m not teaching students or coaching other creative writers,
you can find me out in the thicket of the woods discovering the wisdom nature offers, in some remote back alley swooning over streetlights, or singing with the windows down purring the engine of a car along a highway.
It’s no wonder I can’t shake the wonder lust from my shoes, and why should I?
When I can take you along with me.
With a lifetime of experience traveling and 12 years teaching poets how to be successful in their craft, you are in good hands.
WATERFALLS, MOUNTAINS, SMORES, A FREAKIN’ PORCH BED LOUNGER, CREEKSIDE CABIN, 3 PHENOMENAL POETRY WORKSHOPS PLUS THE RELAXATION AND ADVENTURE YOUR SOUL HAS BEEN YEARNING FOR…
