5 LAME EXCUSES FOR NOT PARTICIPATING IN NPM

WHAT IS NATIONAL POETRY MONTH?

NPM is the largest literary celebration in the world, with millions of participants all across the globe. There’s thousands of events, challenges and opportunities held in the month of April to celebrate Poetry.

WHAT HAPPENS TO MOST POETS...

With a reach like that, it's easy to get overwhelmed in what to participate in and what will leave you feeling burnt out at the end of April.

Almost every poet I know tries to participate in the 30 for 30 challenge.

It's one of the most popular challenges that happen during NPM where you write a poem a day for the whole moth of April.

I see poets sign up for poetry groups where they share a poem a day, but 90% of those poets fizzle out halfway in or hit a dry spell after where they don't write FOR MONTHS.

What's even worse, is signing up for the wrong groups when there’s groups who offer publishing opportunities and rewards.

I bet you have a similar experience with NPM, you might even be at the point where the thought of getting involved stresses you out.

When utilized well, NPM can be a spring board for your writing goals and a great way to take advantage of networking.

Last year I was able to create a whole chapbook of poems off of my 30 for 30 challenge, instead of just "writing in the dark" with no direction.

This year, I plan to spin the 30 for 30 concept and edit a poem per day so that another chapbook I’ve been working on will be ready to publish by the end of April.

The truth is every poet should be participating in NPM no matter what kind of poet you are. There’s too many opportunities you’ll be missing out on.

TOP 5 EXCUSES:

1. EVERY ONE ALREADY KNOWS WHO I AM

Where ever you go, someone is rushing to take a selfie with you and your inbox looks like it's about to burst.

You know you’re loved and seen by the people around you and that’s a great feeling.

The problem is if you focus too much on the people who know you, you cut off all potential fans who haven't heard of you yet.

Because NPM is a GLOBAL month long celebration, not participating kills your advantage of getting booked or released in other cities and countries.

If your goal is to get further reach and grow your fan base you can use NPM strategically to do so.

Not only are there other groups you can make yourself known to, some of those groups have their own rewards for participating. You could get seen and promoted all at the same time.

2. I'M ALREADY A BEST SELLER ON AMAZON

You've been successful with your published books, gotten raving reviews and the buzz about your work is spreading every day.

It's where most poets want to be and you've achieved it.

But what happens next?

NPM could help you tremendously if you’re in this position.

Not only will participating in NPM sustain and build connections with your fans, but help you gain new ones in the process.

If you target groups where new customers are, you could double if not TRIPLE your sales by the end of April.

Another important factor of NPM you'll want to take into consideration, is it’s the perfect time to sharpen your skills or branch out into a new form of writing because you’ll be surrounded by inspiration and support.

Getting outside of your comfort zone for a month can offer longevity by freeing you from one style of writing. Now you've doubled your reach to the people who wouldn't of read you before.

3. I HAVE EVENTS, A BOOK I’M WRITING AND - I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THIS...

You've already mapped out your goals for the year and you’re doing your best to stay on track.

There’s things you've had to sacrifice to complete your goals.

Your time is valuable and you weigh every "yes" and "no."

NPM seems like hard work researching what to participate in, what to avoid and what to utilize.

The thing is...if you’re already planning on achieving goals this year, it would be a loss not to use NPM to your advantage.

The poems that aren’t written yet for your book could be your poem a day and you can use the poetry groups to be accountability partners to ensure you’re supported and making progress. The best part, is when you share you’re goals with the group, they’ll be the first in line waiting to buy your book.

If you have shows already lined up, promoting those shows on NPM sites, podcasts and groups will help with promotion and gain you new followers.

I know, it seems like more effort to search for groups and opportunities to showcase your work and upcoming projects, but there’s GOOD NEWS.

I wanted to create something to help other poets get access to everything they need for NPM without them having to go through the pain of researching and feeling overwhelmed, so I founded the NPM Summit.

4. I DON'T LIKE PEOPLE

You need your privacy to work.

You’re an introvert and don't want a lot of distractions.

You got your reasons and they've done good by you so far.

Participating in NPM to you may seem like torture.

You mean I got to communicate with people?

Well...maybe you don't have to...

That's the beauty of the internet.

If you sign up for a group to get some of the benefits but you don't want to interact... who says you have to?

Do your work, and forget about the rest.

The summit being held for NPM at the bottom of this blog might be perfect for you, because you don't have to ask anyone where the actions at or interact with anyone.

It's all given to you easy peasy - no messy human interaction needed.

It's no secret that creative people thrive around other creatives and this is a great way to do that without having to actually engage with anyone.

5. I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START

poetry for beginners

You know NPM is a great way to boost growth but if you do a search online you get bombarded with groups and hundreds of opportunities.

If you’re already super busy, you don't want to be shooting in the dark. You probably don't even have time to go through them all, especially if you're number 3 on this list.

You'll want to make sure what you participate in will be targeted to your goals.

You might not even know what your goals are...Have no fear!

The NPM Summit is HERE!
